Village Projects International (Solar Light)

August 2008

Robert Lange, President of the ICSEE was in Zanzibar to work with the people of Jongowe village on Tumbatu Island in Zanzibar this July, 2008. About 70 new household-scale solar powered electrical systems were brought by boat to the island for distribution and installation.  Lange helped local installation teams master the system and begin the installation process.

Women in a number of households cooked a traditional rice meal on their new stoves and on their older "three stone" stoves and the wood consumed was carefully measured.  It was found that the new stoves use approximately two thirds as much wood as the old ones.  The new stoves being designed and constructed in the village are, in fact, saving fuel with all the benefits for the women and families of Jongowe.

While on the island, Lange met with the leaders of Gomani, the other village on Tumbatu,      Gomani has 2000 households, and promises to be a major site for solar energy and carbon reduction work in Zanzibar.   Gomani has established a project committee and will be letting the ICSEE know how their stove construction program is going.  more >>>
