DUNIA MOJA is a Swahili phrase meaning ‘One World’.

DUNIA MOJA INTERNATIONAL CENTRE is envisioned as a creative learning centre serving the East Africa community (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi). The centre is dedicated to developing new leadership through innovative educational and development programs in both academic and community settings, and is to be located in the hub of East Africa—Kisumu, Kenya.

Leadership and philosophy of Dunia Moja International Centre

Founder and Executive Director Kitche Magak, PhD, is synthesizing his expertise as a communications specialist, community development consultant, university educator and humanitarian into a unique learning approach. As an academic, he has witnessed the ineffectiveness and even negative effects of much conventional schooling. Drawing inspiration from successful community empowerment programs that utilize

  • Participatory Learning Approaches

  • Arts-Based Learning

  • International Exchange,

Dunia Moja will develop, promulgate and apply more creative and effective teaching methodologies for the classroom.

The Dunia Moja leadership is also committed to introducing curricula that promote co-existence and empowerment across ethnic and social lines, an urgent need in Kenya as in much of Africa and the world.

Dunia Moja as research site

Dunia Moja classrooms will not only use these learning methods but also provide a place where they can be studied, analyzed, and perfected under conditions that one finds in the communities being served.

Initial training and testing

Phase I will implement a teacher-training program in pedagogies that encourage innovative, independent thinking and cross-cultural tolerance.

The curriculum will be tested with teachers at two schools in western Kenya:

  • Kisumu Girls High School
  • MA Junior Primary School.

Pre- and post-implementation studies will be conducted to document effectiveness.

Development of Dunia Moja programming

Future phases include expanded teacher training to schools throughout Kenya and the region, as well as the building of a complex to house training and conference facilities, cultural activities, model school and adult learning centre, and accommodations for international scholars, educators, community advocates and teaching artists.

A significant portion of its Phase 1 budget has been raised from in-kind and individual donations in Kenya and the United States. Plans to raise the balance of funds are being implemented.
