Eritrean Technical Exchange Project

Email system development for Eritrea

The Eritrean Technical Exchange Project (ETEP) founded Eritrea's electronic mail system in 1995, made practical by careful choices of technology adapted to the particular conditions in the country.

For the next five years the email system grew dramatically, providing low-cost efficient email service until the Internet arrived in Eritrea in the year 2000 under the sponsorship of the Leland Initiative. By that time, Eritrea's email system had over 2000 users and provided important services to government agencies and helped stimulate economic development.

For an historical account of this project development, see Wiring Eritrea.

Energy Conservation, Research and Development

ETEP has participated in pilot studies and provided technical and financial resources to the Eritrean Department of Energy to develop high efficiency cooking stoves.

With ETEP seed money, the program has proven the practicality of introducing, in a dozen villages, efficient stoves, which significantly conserve fuel. Implementation on a national scale is being organized by the Department of Energy and will be funded through carbon emissions reduction credits. For related information see Eritrea Traditional Stove Efficiency Info and Improving Traditional Stove Efficiency in Eritrea.

Climate and Resource Information Systems

A current major project of ETEP is to develop an information system focusing on climate and resources. ETEP is providing scholarships to Eritrean professionals who are obtaining Master's level training in Meteorology at San Jose State University, doing research at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and are involved in developing the climate and resources information systems. These systems build on previous ETEP research.
